The Cisco SFP-10G-LR transceiver module can reach up to 10 km operating at a nominal 1310nm wavelength on Single-Mode Fibre (SMF).

It adopts Distributed Laser Feedback technology, so it is used for a variety of projects, including setting up Metro Area Networks (MANs). The SFP-10G-LR is commonly used in the wiring of large networks of buildings, such as on campuses.

The SFP-10G-LR has a minimum operating temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit and a maximum operating temperature of 158 degrees Fahrenheit, making it better for long transmission distance applications, especially compared to the SFP-10G-LR-S. The latter module has a smaller temperature range, making it more suitable for short transmission distance applications.

The LR stands for "Long Reach." The direct opposite of an LR transceiver is an SR (Short Reach) transceiver. Not only are SR transceivers optimised for high-speed transmissions over short distances, but they are also usually multi-mode.

With a Data Transfer Rate (DTR) of 10 Gbps and a Data Link Protocol of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, the 10GB SFP+LR has a maximum transfer distance of 6.2 miles.
